Armadillo Removal

Armadillos are a burrowing mammal that live all over the south. The armadillo that we have down here in Charleston is called the nine banded armadillo because as the name suggests its outer shell is made up of nine jointed armor rings. Armadillos are creatures of habit and mainly forage on small insects, grubs, and worms. Armadillos are unique in that they have poor senses they can’t hear very well, and definitely can’t see very well making their primary sense touch. Once spooked they can run quickly and jump as high as 4 feet! They will usually have multiple dens in one area that are about 7 to 8 inches in diameter and as far down as 15 feet. Female armadillos usually give birth to one littler a year around early spring depending on climate.

Should you worry if you see an armadillo in your yard? Armadillos don’t come with as many risk as the other animals that we have down here in Charleston. They are very low risk for contracting rabies, and are really bad at climbing meaning gaining entrance into your home would be very unlikely. That being said Armadillos can cause real significant damage to your yard and garden. Since 90 percent of an Armadillos diet is made up of insects, small grubs, and worms they will dig small holes all over while rooting to find their next meal. Armadillos should never be dealt with unless by a trained professional, their blood does carry a causative agent of leprosy and should never be handled without protective gear.
